Possible questions for 2008 Using and Applying Statistics

‘School Children’

1. Draw a histogram of the 200 school children
2. Estimate the number of students out of 200 who has a hand span over 21cm.
3. Draw a cumulative frequency table and graph.
4. Find the median, and IQR using the graph.
5. Draw a box and whisker diagram for the children’s hand span.
6. Find the estimate of the mean of hand spans of 200 children.

Using the info for 12 girls and 12 boys:

7. Compare the mean, standard deviation for girls and boys for:
Height, foot length, hand span, wrist circumference, wrist circumference and pulse rate.
8. Find the correlation coefficient for the following:

i) height and foot length
ii) foot length and hand span
iii) wrist circumference and hand span

9. Comment on the correlation coefficients, in each case.

10. Find the regression line for:

i) height and foot length
ii) foot length and hand span
iii) wrist circumference and hand span

11. Plot the linear regression line on a scatter diagram for the above cases.
12. Comment on the gradient of each of these regression lines in reality terms.
13. Use the line of regression to predict the height/foot length/ hand span/ wrist circumference.

The hand span are normally distributed, with SD….. and mean……. Find the probability of the hand spans P(X>20).
